With more than 25,000 students, VCU is the third-largest
research university in Virginia. The Medical College of
Virginia Campus, adjacent to the city’s business and
financial district, was founded in 1838. The Academic Campus
is located in the picturesque early 20th-century residential
neighborhood called the Fan District. The campus began in
1917 as the Richmond School of Social Work and Public
Health, later became the Richmond Professional Institute,
and in 1968 merged with the Medical College of Virginia to
create VCU.
